I am not currently part of a CC community, but am fairly familiar with the program. I am debating whether to join CC next year and attempting to determine what age is the best age to start. This year we are really focusing on math and reading/language arts (a great choice for this year!). I don't want to miss a good learning opportunity next year, but I also don't want to start CC until my child is old enough to really get the benefit of the CC program. For me, the 5 year olds that I observed were just barely skimming the surface (in other words, not worth the time investment for me for a 5 year old). Do many people recommend waiting until older than 6? Any helpful advice? Any other tidbits I should be considering? Thanks!Amynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-37550416098262347002012-10-16T09:28:08.514-07:002012-10-16T09:28:08.514-07:00Thanks - I have decided the same for the charts. ...Thanks - I have decided the same for the charts. After the first week, my daughter panicked to add new charts. So, we are taking them one by one. This is our first year, so not sure yet how they all fit into the big picture. We do the same for writing - I do feel if we miss a day or two we are behind and struggle to catch up. Adding baby #4 is a true juggling act on most days. Blessings and Enjoy your fall!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16842502359463110796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-9114964389591390862012-10-12T20:17:28.700-07:002012-10-12T20:17:28.700-07:00Anonymous~ I try to have Levi copy a chart a day. ...Anonymous~ I try to have Levi copy a chart a day. I haven't really put a huge emphasis on them, other than chart A--I definitely want him to have that info memorized (and he does). For the others, I know he'll have lots of time to get them down. Right now, we're putting a little more time into our daily sentences, because we are doing all the analytical tasks using the white board and talking it through, mostly. But we only do those 2-3x a week. I try to break up the writing tasks. So we work on a key word outline one day, a rough draft one or two days, and a final draft the last day. We aren't doing anything other than that for grammar and writing right now. I hope that helps!Heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05878817427434603915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-9787464033213199842012-10-11T14:49:36.989-07:002012-10-11T14:49:36.989-07:00Love the pararaphs regarding context-- so true, es...Love the pararaphs regarding context-- so true, especially this sentence: "I’ve found that even if the context comes months (or even years later), the boys are more excited and have a better retention of stories and facts if they have some memory work under their belt. They enjoy learning the memory work (with songs, hand motions, and/or visual aids—the classes are not grueling!) whether or not they have context right away, so I’ve learned not to sweat it." I was thinking about writing a blog post about this, but it would just be a much wordier version of your spot on sentence!Aprilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09320420160290290694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-10337088325837589452012-10-11T04:42:18.465-07:002012-10-11T04:42:18.465-07:00Hi Heidi -

In our situation, the CC grammar memory work fills a spot that I would otherwise fill with FLL. And we use IEW poetry memory (which, again, could be a gap filled by FLL). And we use Writing With Ease from Peace Hill Press for writing exercises rather than using the MCT exercises. FLL has similar writing exercises. So, yes, FLL would be a great program to use along with MCT.Heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05878817427434603915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-32147854887144120342012-10-08T20:31:14.943-07:002012-10-08T20:31:14.943-07:00Bravo, my friends! Then we finally got a class, but I realized it just wasn't going to be a good fit for us at this stage in our life. I have several of the CC materials, so I try to fit them into our schedule and adapt to our needs, but I sure wish I had that accountability! But even though CC isn't in our plan, I love reading about your experiences.

Also, if you don't mind me joining the conversation on FLL and MCT. . . We are long-time FLL users, but after reading your language arts post I decided to add MCT into the mix, and I love how they compliment each other so well. Personally, I like FLL better, but the Practice Island sentences were a great way to reinforce and even fill in some gaps. So if the budget allows, I highly recommend doing both.Kelliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16095729633573268457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-91239578228564787282012-10-05T22:18:06.749-07:002012-10-05T22:18:06.749-07:00This was a great post! If you have a 'get to the point' no-frills sort of child, FFL works well. If you are a parent who wants clearly defined lessons and learning objectives, FFL is the curriculum for you. If you have a child who is imaginative, story-based, fun-loving, ready for snuggles and talking about ideas, MCT is the way to go. It is brimming with personality and the author's passion for language and imagination really comes through without sacrificing any of the rigor. In fact, while the stories are silly and fun, he does *not* talk down to children and obviously thinks them capable of learning big things. :)

Debbie~ Feel free to share. :)

Jodi~ Gasp! You're entering a new era. I cannot fathom being there at this point. I'm not sure I want her to stay 2 forever (ack!!), but I don't think I'll ever be ready for her to grow up.
