However, it is rather complicated. Not every assignment can be completed perfectly. What to do if you need to submit a great paper? I have yet to do a "formal" phonics program with my daughter who is 5 1/2. We read constantly, though, and she can read some beginner books like "Green Eggs and Ham" or "Hop on Pop." I have been teaching her phonics rules as we go along.

So my question is, I'm wondering if I should just jump into AAS or do I need to take the time to do a phonics program like OPGTR or 100EZ lessons. Any thoughts?Gracenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-11879198294203078292011-05-25T11:19:06.183-07:002011-05-25T11:19:06.183-07:00Karen~ I'm sorry it took so long to reply. Blo...Karen~ I'm sorry it took so long to reply. Blogger has been acting up for me! If your son is going into 2nd grade and is strong in language arts, you could give MCT a try and just take your time going through it. I can't speak to how quickly the program advances in skill level. If you are interested in IEW, you could purchase the main writing program and watch the DVDs. It is something you could implement over the span of a few years. Or you could wait and do WWE 2 and FLL 3. I think it is a toss-up! Does your son *like* WWE and FLL, or is he ready for something new?

Tsh~ I know I already replied to you elsewhere, but I'll put this here in case someone has the same question. I think AAS is such an incredible foundation in phonics, spelling, and dictation, that I would recommend it for all students. The beauty of the program is that it is mastery based. You go as quickly or as slowly through the program as you need to! There is also some flexibility for the teacher, I think, in how you implement all of the possible features of the program.Heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05878817427434603915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-17275161975546783982011-05-19T07:15:28.612-07:002011-05-19T07:15:28.612-07:00Heidi, I, too, appreciate your wisdom here, and ho...Heidi, I, too, appreciate your wisdom here, and how freely you share it! Thanks so much.

And already, most of my questions were answered here in the comments (thanks to Laura, who asked questions related to 1st grade!).

One other question: Would you say AAS is good even for students strong in language arts? I've heard that it's a little intense, and I don't want to overwhelm Tate. At the same time, I want our 'spine' subject to be Language arts, making sure this is a rock-hard foundation. I had friends who just stuck with Spelling Workout and said that was enough, and another who switched to AAS b/c their son's spelling was really behind. So I wasn't sure if that meant it's too much if spelling isn't so much an issue.

That said, it looks really solid. I like its structure and its emphasis on phonograms.Tsh @ Simple Momhttp://simplemom.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-31033194347581676402011-05-18T15:52:21.163-07:002011-05-18T15:52:21.163-07:00okay, thanks for sharing all this!!

We also did the first WWE and AAS 1&2
He is in book6 going on to 7 of Explode the Code which will take us to our year end.
So what would you suggest for his next year?? We will still do AAS and WWE but would you do MCT and IEW? what would you choose??

I appreciate your advice :)Karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18407194404691331670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-26535263748355817022011-05-18T09:33:36.883-07:002011-05-18T09:33:36.883-07:00I appreciate your contagious enthusiasm for learni...I appreciate your contagious enthusiasm for learning right along with your kiddos so much, Heidi!
You are a joy and an encouragement to me! I always look forward to something new here at Mt. Hope.

This is our first year with All About Spelling as well, and we have LOVED it! I have a 4th and a 2nd grader--along with three other little ones. We started both older kids over from the beginning with AAS, pushing through the first two levels this year and hoping to continue on through the summer. As with you, I cannot cheer loud enough for this program!

We have enjoyed FLL and Writing With Ease. Until now, we have used the WWE Workbooks, but I would really love to begin just using The Complete Writer Instructor Text and pull passages from the books my children are reading. We'll see if I can get my act together...the ease of the workbooks is so tempting.

I am starting and directing a Classical Conversations Program here in our neck of the woods this fall. (Gulp.) It is a lot to take on, but I am so thrilled to be able to offer something of this caliber to the families in our community. We head to training practicum next week. You posts on CC are so, so encouraging. I cannot thank you enough!

Blessings to you, Heidi!

Your Fan & Friend~
Kate

BTW, until now we have used Saxon Math and have enjoyed it--as much as you can enjoy math. But as my daughter heads into 5th grade I have toyed a bit with Teaching Textbooks. Hmmmm...you make it sound very desirable. If I were also doing CC, I would probably go through the grammar memory work in FLL and replace the wording of definitions with the CC wording so my child wouldn't get confused. First Language Lessons is a great blend of grammar, copywork, narration, dictation, and poetry. I would feel free to substitute some of the poetry selections if I had other poems I wanted my children to memorize.

MCT materials (as well as most of the IEW materials) are geared toward 3rd grade and up. Poor Luke (my 1st grader) just gets dragged along. :)Heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05878817427434603915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-4084983092859848232011-05-18T05:01:43.243-07:002011-05-18T05:01:43.243-07:00Thanks Heidi, starting to tutor this fall with CC,...Thanks Heidi, starting to tutor this fall with CC, and wanting not to bombard my kids, yet wanting to create a solid foundation. Always appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts & thorough information about your materials.
